Plus de détailsMar 3, 2016. #21. It Looks similar to my previous mill, a Precision Matthews PM932 which is also an RF45 clone. There are quite a few different Chinese vendors and quality varies from very good to pretty bad. It is certainly worth looking at and would be a good deal if it's a well built version.

Plus de détailsSo then I get wind of this big hulking (for a hobbyist bench style bed mill) thingie from Charter Oak. After doing some cursory investigation, I find it's a re-hash of a IH(?) mill some of the home CNC types use/used but not without having to upgrade/mod the thing. Great. Another Chinese kit machine. NOT something I'm really into at this point.

Plus de détailsThe new motor plus the VFD takes the spindle speed up to 35OO RPM +. I have been agonizing for several months over which mill to buy. The IH mill's work envelope, particularly the 12"of Y travel, plus the availability of a ready made CNC conversion kit sealed the deal.

Plus de détailsTormach's slant bed fits almost all of these, although at the way ragged edge of my budget. Charter Oak's AEX lathe, while having a few nice features, is well over my budget, and only has a .800 headstock through hole- and that's a deal-breaker. Are there any other options out there? Doc.

Plus de détailsEven a 1.5 inch face mill will fling it a good 10 feet. One thing I did which I am grateful for on a frequent basis is this, the base of my enclosure is only slightly larger than the base of the mill. About 6 inches wider left to right and deep enough front to rear to cover the mill and all the cnc mechanicals hanging off the front.
Plus de détailsIt's not like you can't build a great CNC conversion starting with a knee mill. There were a lot of great CNC knee mills back in the day too, for example the Tree CNC Milling machines. But, if you have the luxury to choose any donor machine to start from, I'd choose a bed mill.
Plus de détailsOk, I still don't have a full kit (no Z servo, missing a few other things), but taking into account having to send Z-parts in to be re-machined, I think I have enough to get started. If you built a kit recently, is there anything you regret not doing while you had the machine apart? For example: - while I have the head off I'm going to take it down, inspect all the bearings, clean out casting ...
Plus de détailsIn the mean time I arranged financing on a Charter Oak TurnKey CNC Mill. I got notice the truck line picked it up from Charter Oak yesterday. I'll document my experiences here in this thread. Paul has been very helpful so far before the sale. He has answered all my questions. I did have one small surprise. I only found out about it by accident.
Plus de détailsCharter Oak Automation's New CNC Bed Mill Charter Oak . A similarly outfitted PCNC 1100 mill costs slightly less than Charter Oak's CNC bed mill (with Tormach's four-axis configuration being less cost-competitive than their three-axis configuration, due to their more costly fourth-axis rotary table system), but offers substantially less power and versatility than our own CNC bed mill.

Plus de détailsWelcome to my build thread. I plan on converting my Charter Oak Automation 12Z manual mill from manual to CNC and documenting the process here.
